Renowned concert pianist Daniel Vnukowski performs Franz Schubert’s sublime, masterful Piano Sonata D960 in B-flat major, a monumental piece that Schubert wrote during the last year of his life in 1828. The first movement is a deeply, spiritual work that begins with a soft chorale and is immediately intercepted by a trill in the low register of the piano, resembling the rumble of distant thunder. At one point during the work, we also hear a quote from Adestes Fideles, also known as O Come All Ye Faithful, an unsurprising coincidence given the heavenly nature of this movement. This piano sonata is a genuine retreat from the madness of the outside world!
This virtual recital is preceded by a short introduction to the work and followed by a Q&A session.
