Inspired by Yo-Yo-Ma’s Songs of Comfort project, this special house concert series brings together comforting piano music in a time of great distress and pain. Enjoy a series of live-streamed recitals (see schedule below). Each concert uses high-end, professional, audio-visual gear, in order to recreate the environment of a concert hall virtually – from my home to yours – capturing the nuances and subtle dynamics of the music.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Internet connection fast enough to view the livestreams?

Please do a free Internet speed test at https://www.speedtest.net to check your download speed before logging on to the virtual events. You need a minimum speed of 2 Mbps to watch the concerts in standard resolution and 5 Mbps to view in high-definition or “HD”.

Download speeds can be easily upgraded with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), if you require more bandwidth capacity. Some cities now offer blazing fast fiber-optic connections, which can greatly improve your overall Internet surfing experience.

However, the reliability and stability of your Internet connection is often outside of one’s control and largely dependent on the amount of use your local infrastructure receives at any given time of day. If you are experiencing many buffering issues and freeze frames during the recitals even though you have a fast Internet connection, please contact your ISP’s tech support to try and resolve the issue. They will be able to determine if the issue has to do with your home router, computer settings or a more complex issue such as an overloaded node in your neighborhood.

Do I need any special equipment to access these livestreams?
No. You can use any device (i.e. smartphone, tablet, computer) with an internet connection, although the use of headphones is strongly recommended. Download the Zoom application (Zoom Client for Meetings) to your computer well in advance in order to ensure quick and efficient access to the pre-concert talks.
Do I have to register to watch the livestreams?
Yes, click on a individual event above for the registration details. Some livestreams require a nominal registration fee, while others are free of charge and require you to fill out a simple RSVP form in order to attend. Upon successful registration, you will receive a special access link via email, with details on how to view the events. Visit that link on the correct date & time of your selected broadcast to view the concert and accompanying pre-concert talk.

All times are provided in Pacific (i.e. Los Angeles) and Eastern (i.e. Toronto) time zones. You can use a free online time zone converter to find the correct time for your zone. (i.e. https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html)

Will the virtual concerts be recorded and archived?
The virtual concerts will be recorded and available for customers and registrants only, up to a period of 30 days following the performance. The pre-concert discussions will not be recorded and can only be accessed live.
Why do the livestreams take place on two links - Zoom and YouTube? Wouldn’t it be easier to host everything on one link?

It would certainly be easier to host everything on one link, but the overall viewing experience would be compromised.

We have found that Zoom is ideal for hosting an engaging, video chat with participants and use this platform for our pre-concert discussions. However, Zoom offers a very mediocre quality of sound (even with the “original sound” option enabled), which is comparable to a speakerphone with a narrow frequency range and is, thus, entirely unsuitable for a classical music performance.

We ask our viewers to switch to a platform that offers an enhanced, listening experience for the concert segment of each virtual event, such as YouTube or Twitch.tv. Twitch.tv offers a slightly better quality of audio over Youtube at 160 kbps, but is still inferior to the uncompressed, 44.1 kHz, crystal-clear audio of a CD.

The Zoom link remains active during the course of the recital and you are welcome to stay on. However, if you have a slower Internet connection and find that the quality of the performance is degraded, you can always leave the Zoom meeting and rejoin at any time. We often ask everyone to rejoin Zoom after the performance in order to give the artist(s) a round of applause!

Can I watch the livestreams on any device/browser?

The livestreams can be watched on any device, such as a computer, television (with access to the Internet), smartphone and tablet. However, we highly recommend the use of Chrome browser, which is a free download available here: https://www.google.com/chrome/

We also recommend that you install the latest updates on your device to ensure maximum compatibility. For example, the livestreams will not work on deprecated browsers, such as Internet Explorer.

Do I need a super-fast internet connection?

Any broadband (i.e. DSL or Cable) internet connection will allow you to enjoy the livestreams. You’ll need a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps in order to view the livestream at full HD resolution. However, if you happen to have a slower connection, the livestream will automatically adjust to your speed.

Can I get a tax-receipt for my donation?

We are not able to issue tax-receipts for any donations made through the danperforms.com website. If you wish to receive a tax-receipt for a supported cause, please visit the official homepage of your selected non-profit organization and make a contribution with them directly.

How can I make a donation to the livestreaming project?

We thank you for your kind support in this project. Donations are used to offset the exorbitant costs of converting our home into a professional recording studio during these difficult times, and cover such expenses as piano tuning, professional audio/visual gear, lighting kits, live-streaming platforms, software and plugins.
